Hypnosis could be the key to beating junk food addiction

/0 Comments/in HYPNOSIS BUFFALO NY /by admin

Junk food can be as addictive as hard drugs

Hypnosis could be the key to eating healthier

New research has found that the UK has the unhealthiest diet in Europe, with us consuming five times more processed food than Portugal, and four times higher than France, Greece, or Italy. 50% of the average person’s diet in the UK is processed food, which increases the risk of heart disease and strokes.

This kind of processed junk food can be as addictive as hard drugs, with salt and sugar being habit-forming substances that create positive feedback loops in the brain. Eating any food triggers the release of dopamine in the brain, however certain sugars, fats, and processed chemicals can have the same effect as cocaine, flooding our brain with more dopamine than it is used to, thus overriding dopamine pathways to only release the neurochemical when we eat those unhealthy foods, which causes an addiction. This leads to cravings, which are distinctly different from hunger. Hunger is when our body needs sustenance; cravings are when our bodies want a reward. Dopamine is not necessary for maintenance of the body, only as a reward which makes us repeat behaviour. This is why some people eat junk food even when they’re not hungry.

Eating less of these foods can eventually reset our dopamine levels and responses, but this is easier said than done. Fighting addiction is one of the toughest things a person can do, especially when combined with the fact that so much of what we eat is the very thing we’re trying to cut out of our system. Hypnosis can bypass the addiction by tapping into the power of the subconscious mind, meaning people eat less junk food without exerting any effort.

“Foods that are high in sugar or salt are more likely to be addictive, when blood sugar levels are lowered there is a physical craving which is hard to resist. For people with processed food addiction I use hypnosis to help them believe that junk food is toxic or poisonous. People respond to foods differently if they associate them with being dangerous. Since junk food is responsible for so many health issues from obesity to Type 2 diabetes it’s not difficult for the unconscious mind to accept that junk food is genuinely dangerous.

Hypnosis, antidepressant therapies confer similar reductions in hot flash symptoms

/0 Comments/in Hypnosis for Health, HYPNOSIS BUFFALO NY /by admin

Postmenopausal women who reported bothersome hot flashes experienced a similar reduction in symptoms when assigned to antidepressant therapy or hypnosis, whereas a combination of the two therapies yielded no greater benefit than the individual treatments, according to findings from a pilot, proof-of-concept study.

“Hypnosis is an effective treatment for hot flashes,” Debra L. Barton, PhD, RN, the Mary Lou Willard French endowed chair of oncology nursing at the University of Michigan, and colleagues wrote. “Future research is needed to clarify whether hypnosis could be combined with a different low-dose pharmacologic intervention to provide optimal relief of hot flashes synergistically without ceiling effects and without side effects, or to identify a population who could benefit more from such a combination.”

Barton and colleagues analyzed data from 71 postmenopausal women with and without a history of breast cancer, who could not or did not take estrogen therapy for hot flash relief. All the women reported bothersome hot flashes for at least 1 month, at a frequency of at least four per day. Researchers randomly assigned women to one of four treatments for 8 weeks from 2010 to 2011: venlafaxine (75 mg; Effexor, Pfizer) plus hypnosis therapy (n = 15); venlafaxine plus sham hypnosis (n = 19; white noise therapy); placebo pill plus hypnosis (n = 22); or placebo pill plus sham hypnosis (n = 15).

All women kept track of hot flashes in a daily diary beginning 1 week before treatment, indicating the number and severity of hot flashes during 24 hours. From week 2 to week 5, women completed weekly visits with a study therapist to learn about and experience hypnosis or sham therapy; behavioral intervention continued at home for weeks 6 through 8, using a CD. Primary endpoint was average difference in hot flash score from baseline to end of study; hot flash severity (mild, moderate, severe or very severe) was given a value ranging from 1 to 4. Women also completed the menopausal-specific quality of life (MENQOL) questionnaire.

Researchers found that women in the combined therapy arm reported hot flash reductions that were not statistically different from those of women in the venlafaxine/sham hypnosis arm (P = .05). Researchers also observed no statistically significant differences between women assigned to placebo pill plus hypnosis and women assigned to venlafaxine/sham hypnosis. Participants assigned to the placebo/sham hypnosis arm experienced a 25% decrease in hot flashes during the study period, whereas women in each active arm reported hot flash score reductions of just more than 50%, according to the researchers. There were no significant adverse effects during the study.

“In this pilot study, the combination of venlafaxine and hypnosis did not yield greater reductions in hot flashes,” the researchers wrote. “Although this was a surprise, the dose of 75 mg of venlafaxine may have been too strong, eclipsing the effect of hypnosis and resulting in a mechanistic ceiling effect. However, based on the practice and medication log, since the venlafaxine/hypnosis arm listened to the CD the longest and took less medication, it could be that this was not as good of an uation of the combination of the two treatments as it could have been.” – by Regina Schaffer

Health: Parents Using Hypnosis To Keep Kids Focused

/0 Comments/in HYPNOSIS BUFFALO NY /by admin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Hypnosis has taken on a new focus as more and more parents are now putting their kids under a hypnotic trance, but some say the practice may be going too far.

Eric Ferrer-Alfaro, 10, has HDHD. His mother doesn’t want to medicate him, and nothing else has worked. She’s turned to hypnotism.

“We’ve tried meditation, relaxation, things like that,” Silvana Ferrer said.

She said he has trouble focusing in school, and she’s optimistic this will help.

“I’m hoping for the teachers not to call me anymore, or at least call me less,” Ferrer said.

Hypnotherapist Lisa Machenberg said she’s hypnotized close to 1,000 children, including her own.

“I started hypnotizing the children at 7 months to sleep quickly, calmly, soundly, and deeply all through the night,” she said.

She later hypnotized them to improve their performance in sports and at school.

She said she is essentially teaching Eric to hypnotize himself, which will help when facing a challenging task.

“Whenever you want to focus you breathe in on the on the word powerful,” he said.

As Machenberg explained, the hypnosis allows him to complete homework assignments.

“When he wants to sit and do his homework, when he needs to listen to the teacher, when he needs to curb his impulses — all he needs to do is breathe in that power word and it resets the neutrons,” she said.

Afterwards, a short homework session went well, and Eric hopes that continues.

“I hope it will help me because tomorrow I have a lot of division and a lot of tests on math,” he said.

Machneberg said there’s power to be harnessed.

“Let’s learn how to use hypno-parenting to consciously influence our children to be more peaceful in the house, to have focused concentration,” she said.

Psychologist Dr. Sanam Hafeez said putting kids in a trance is going too far and shouldn’t take the place of good parenting skills.

“The idea is not to gain control of your child’s mind, but it’s to teach them what’s right, what’s appropriate, what’s desirable, so they can have control over their own mind,” she said.

Mental health experts say hypnosis is more appropriate to treat conditions such as extreme pain or bed wetting, or serious trauma such as the loss of a parent.

Flights on the 20-day holiday feature yoga sessions and hypnotherapy.

DreamMaker launches Passport to 50, the private jet trip of a lifetime for just $18 million

Experiential travel boutique DreamMaker has designed a holiday that requires no planning, no stress and monogrammed silk pyjamas.

All you need is:

1. Up to 50 friends and family

2. Twenty days of your time

3. $US13,875,000 or $18,384,652.50.

Easy right? Just kick that $8 green smoothie habit and you’ll be raring to go in no time.

Titled Passport to 50, this vacation has been styled to celebrate the milestone of billionaires. With no expense spared and setting off in August 2017, this experience will cover 20 cities in 20 days on a private Boeing 767, with your loved ones flying in tandem on a second Boeing business jet.

Sounds like a lot of air time right? According to Dream Maker, only 12 per cent of your time will be spent commuting.

But with in-flight yoga sessions, fashion shows and tailored hypnotherapy, leaving the plane might be a problem.

The mastermind behind experiential aviation, Gregory Patrick, believes the holistic and healing program will be vital to the success of this lavish excursion.

“It is irrelevant how big and beautiful your private jet is if you are unable to relax comfortably or get the required amount of sleep on the plane,” Patrick said.

A master somelier will be on board to match every mouthful with what we expect will be very fancy wine. A $500,000 poker tournament will also keep the punters entertained, and if you need anything else your personal staff member will be more than happy to assist.

Destinations such as Siem Reap, London and Knoxville are on the agenda, but little has been said about what will be occurring on land. We do know, however, that it includes a 50-monk blessing surrounded by 50,000 lotus petals.

The trip wouldn’t be complete without luxurious amenities. A set of 18-carat gold swizzle sticks fixed with blue and white diamonds valued at $1m will be yours to take home. This commissioned piece by World of Diamonds Group will be the perfect souvenir, with 20 white sparklers representing each city.

If this is all too indulgent for your taste, the Passport to 50 experience will be giving back.

“It makes no sense to work so hard to please the most discerning of clientele without making the same effort to balance the decadence with an element of kindness that delivers higher levels of fulfillment.” Patrick said.

Some 2500 bicycles will be distributed to children in Cambodia. Clean drinking water will be provided for 50,000 children in the Philippines and fun centres will be built in the UK for those battling life-threatening illnesses.

The “trip of a lifetime” will begin on the island of Koh Samui and continue through Siem Reap, Kathmandu, Agra, Florence, Siena, Cannes, Moulinet, London, Barcelona, Ibiza, Marbella, Marrakech, Havana, Knoxville, Kona, El Nido and an unnamed secret island, before finishing in Manilla.

Midwife Emily Street claims she enjoyed a three- week ORGASM after giving birth

/0 Comments/in HYPNOSIS BUFFALO NY /by admin

A mother of four claims she has experienced four pain-free labours using hypnotherapy and breathing exercises – before enjoying a three-week orgasm.

Midwife Emily Street, 35, experienced the euphoric sensation after each of the births of her four children.

The mum, who lives with husband Paul, 34, a food company manager, had her first pain-free labour when she gave birth to her oldest, Oscar, now aged nine.

Emily, from Hale, Cheshire, said: ‘I was really quite terrified having seen loads of things as a midwife, and obviously the things that really stick with you are the ones that weren’t so nice.

‘I remember being heavily pregnant with Oscar, sitting on the sofa a nervous wreck and just bursting into tears saying, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to do this’.’ Read more

A look at integrative medicine with Stanford’s David Spiegel

/0 Comments/in HYPNOSIS BUFFALO NY /by admin

I try to keep an open mind, but as someone immersed in science, I tend to view most non-traditional medicine rather skeptically. That said, I’ve spent many years living in places —like California’s Nevada City or Santa Cruz — where integrative therapies abound, and strait-laced me is often the odd one out.

That’s why I was particularly eager to chat with and learn more from David Spiegel, MD. A professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, Spiegel is the medical director for the Stanford Center for Integrative Medicine and an expert in hypnosis. Here, finally, is a researcher who straddles both worlds, I thought — he can help me peer into the murky world of integrative medicine. And, as you’ll read below, I learned quite a bit, including the proper terminology.

Hypnotherapy Helped Me End a Toxic Relationship

/0 Comments/in HYPNOSIS BUFFALO NY /by admin

One day, it was like I was suddenly free.

I spent nearly five years of my life feeling emotionally imprisoned by a relationship. Although I had become a master of smiling my way through it, I was silently beating on the prison walls, pleading for someone to save me.

My reason for staying with him can be summed up in one ugly word: fear. Every attempt to leave was always met with what I felt were crippling manipulations, venomous tantrums, and control tactics. Yet, as bizarre as it sounds, I was equally terrified that no one else would ever “love” me as much as he did.

I had received the pep talks, recited the affirmations, read the self-help books, and cried all of the tears. I had even burned the sage. But, sadly, there I was — still doggy-paddling my way through the turbulent waters. The notion of reaching shore seemed to be an Read more

Cuba’s Lung Cancer Vaccine and It’s Coming To The Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo NY U.S.

Cuba’s Lung Cancer Vaccine

When New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) headed to Havana on a historic trade mission in April, he returned with the promise of an important commodity: a Cuban-developed lung cancer vaccine.

The vaccine, called CimaVax, has been researched in Cuba for 25 years and became available for free to the Cuban public in 2011. The country’s Center for Molecular Immunology signed an agreement last month with Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York to import CimaVax and begin clinical trials in the United States.

Coming To The Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo NY U.S.

“We’re still at the very early stages of assessing the promise of this vaccine, but the evidence so far from clinical trials in Cuba and Europe has been striking,” Dr. Kelvin Lee, Jacobs Family Chair in Immunology and co-leader of the Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy Program at Roswell Park, told The Huffington Post.

When President Obama loosened the United State’s 55-year long trade embargo against the island nation in December, he allowed for such joint research deals to be finalized. Similar programs might have been impossible just a few years ago.

Cuba has long been known for its high-quality cigars, and lung cancer is a major public health problem and the fourth-leading cause of death in the country. A 2007 study of patients with stages IIIB and IV lung cancer, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, confirmed the safety of the CimaVax and showed an increase in tumor-reducing antibody production in more than half of cases. It proved particularly effective for increased survival if the study participant was younger than 60.

So far, 5,000 patients worldwide have been treated with CimaVax, including 1,000 patients in Cuba. Lee said the latest Cuban study of 405 patients, which has not yet been published, confirms earlier findings about the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. What’s more, the shot is cheap — it costs the Cuban government just $1, Wired reported. And studies have found there are no significant side effects.

“We think it may be an effective way to prevent cancer from developing or recurring, so that’s where a lot of our team’s excitement comes in,” Lee said. “There’s good reason to believe that this vaccine may be effective in both treating and preventing several types of cancer, including not only lung but breast, colorectal, head-and-neck, prostate and ovarian cancers, so the potential positive impact of this approach could be enormous.”

Preclinical investigations of CimaVax at Roswell Park and the unpublished findings of the 405-patient Cuban study are promising, according to Lee. CimaVax works by blocking a hormone that causes lung cancer tumors to grow, a method which has also been shown to be effective in treating colon cancer. That fuels researchers’ hope that the vaccine will be an effective treatment for other types of cancer as well.

Still, he acknowledged that the vaccine needs rigorous testing in each of these different disease areas to know whether or not the drug will work as well as the scientists at Roswell Park hope. To be clear, the CimaVax doesn’t cure cancer. It’s a therapeutic vaccine that works by targeting the tumor itself, specifically going after the proteins that allow a tumor to keep growing. (And as PBS points out, a person can’t just take a shot of CimaVax and continue to smoke without fear of lung cancer.)

“We hope to determine in the next few years whether giving CimaVax to patients who’ve had a lung cancer removed, or maybe even to people at high risk of developing lung or head-and-neck cancers because of a history of heavy smoking, may be beneficial and may spare those people from having a cancer diagnosis or recurrence,” Lee said.

The United States is currently at work developing two lung cancer vaccines of its own, GVAX and BLP 25, though neither has been studied for as long as CimaVax.

How does a tiny island nation with limited economic resources pioneer a powerhouse cancer vaccine? “They’ve had to do more with less,” Candace Johnson, CEO of Roswell Park, told Wired. “So they’ve had to be even more innovative with how they approach things. For over 40 years, they have had a preeminent immunology community.”

Despite decades of economic problems and the U.S. trade embargo, Cuba has been a model of public health. According the New York Times, life expectancy for Cubans is 79 years, on par with the United States, despite the fact that its economy per person is eight times smaller. While many drugs and even anesthesia have been hard to come by over the years, Cuba has one of the best doctor to patient ratios in the world. Moreover, the Cuban government’s investment in primary care for residents and preventative health measures like public education, housing and nutrition have paid huge dividends in the health of citizens, especially relative to similarly poor countries.

Looking forward, ongoing research collaborations between the two nations are almost certainly on the horizon as relations between Cuba and the U.S. continue to thaw. For now, Lee says the researchers at Roswell Park have their eyes trained on about 20 cancer treatment and prevention technologies in Cuba — including another lung cancer vaccine called racotumomab that the group hopes to study in clinical trials at Roswell.

Correction: An earlier version of this article said that the Center for Molecular Immunology signed a research agreement with Roswell Park Cancer Institute this week. The agreement was actually signed in April.
