Health: Parents Using Hypnosis To Keep Kids Focused

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Hypnosis has taken on a new focus as more and more parents are now putting their kids under a hypnotic trance, but some say the practice may be going too far.

Eric Ferrer-Alfaro, 10, has HDHD. His mother doesn’t want to medicate him, and nothing else has worked. She’s turned to hypnotism.

“We’ve tried meditation, relaxation, things like that,” Silvana Ferrer said.

She said he has trouble focusing in school, and she’s optimistic this will help.

“I’m hoping for the teachers not to call me anymore, or at least call me less,” Ferrer said.

Hypnotherapist Lisa Machenberg said she’s hypnotized close to 1,000 children, including her own.

“I started hypnotizing the children at 7 months to sleep quickly, calmly, soundly, and deeply all through the night,” she said.

She later hypnotized them to improve their performance in sports and at school.

She said she is essentially teaching Eric to hypnotize himself, which will help when facing a challenging task.

“Whenever you want to focus you breathe in on the on the word powerful,” he said.

As Machenberg explained, the hypnosis allows him to complete homework assignments.

“When he wants to sit and do his homework, when he needs to listen to the teacher, when he needs to curb his impulses — all he needs to do is breathe in that power word and it resets the neutrons,” she said.

Afterwards, a short homework session went well, and Eric hopes that continues.

“I hope it will help me because tomorrow I have a lot of division and a lot of tests on math,” he said.

Machneberg said there’s power to be harnessed.

“Let’s learn how to use hypno-parenting to consciously influence our children to be more peaceful in the house, to have focused concentration,” she said.

Psychologist Dr. Sanam Hafeez said putting kids in a trance is going too far and shouldn’t take the place of good parenting skills.

“The idea is not to gain control of your child’s mind, but it’s to teach them what’s right, what’s appropriate, what’s desirable, so they can have control over their own mind,” she said.

Mental health experts say hypnosis is more appropriate to treat conditions such as extreme pain or bed wetting, or serious trauma such as the loss of a parent.

Researchers: Fast food linked to cancers, thyroid disease

A recent study has found evidence that Americans may be consuming fast food wrapped in paper treated with chemicals linked to kidney and testicular cancers, thyroid disease, low birth rates and immunotoxicity in children.

According to a new study published in Environmental Science and Technology, researchers found evidence of fluorinated compounds in fast food packaging materials, including  hamburger and sandwich wrappers, pastry bags, beverage cups and French fry containers.

The compounds, called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), were found in 56-percent of dessert and bread wrappers, 38-percent of sandwich and burger wrappers and 20-percent of paperboard (the same kind used for sandwich, taco and French fry boxes). These same chemicals are found in stain-resistant products, firefighter materials and nonstick cookware.

 

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are highly persistent synthetic chemicals, some of which have been associated with cancer, developmental toxicity, immunotoxicity, and other health effects. PFASs in grease-resistant food packaging can leach into food and increase dietary exposure. Researchers collected ∼400 samples of food contact papers, paperboard containers, and beverage containers from fast food restaurants throughout the United States and measured total fluorine using particle-induced γ-ray emission (PIGE) spectroscopy. PIGE can rapidly and inexpensively measure total fluorine in solid-phase samples. Researchers found that 46% of food contact papers and 20% of paperboard samples contained detectable fluorine (>16 nmol/cm2). Liquid chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis of a subset of 20 samples found perfluorocarboxylates, perfluorosulfonates, and other known PFASs and/or unidentified polyfluorinated compounds (based on nontargeted analysis). The total peak area for PFASs was higher in 70% of samples (10 of 14) with a total fluorine level of >200 nmol/cm2 compared to six samples with a total fluorine level of <16 nmol/cm2. Samples with high total fluorine levels but low levels of measured PFASs may contain volatile PFASs, PFAS polymers, newer replacement PFASs, or other fluorinated compounds. The prence of fluorinated chemicals in fast food packaging demonstrates their potentially significant contribution to dietary PFAS exposure and environmental contamination during production and disposal. (via Fluorinated Compounds in U.S. Fast Food Packaging, Environmental Science & Technology Letters)

According to a news release from Science Daily, previous studies have shown that these PFASs can contaminate the food and when consumed, accumulating in the body.

“This is a really persistent chemical,” said Graham Peaslee, a professor of experimental nuclear physics in the College of Science at the University of Notre Dame, who tested 407 samples of packaging material.

“It gets in the bloodstream, it stays there and accumulates. There are diseases that correlate to it, so we really don’t want this class of chemicals out there.”

Science Daily says PFASs have been previously linked to kidney and testicular cancers, thyroid disease, low birth weight and immunotoxicity in children, among other health issues. The chemicals take many years before just 50 percent of the intake leaves the human body.

“These chemicals don’t biodegrade. They don’t naturally degrade. They persist in the environment for a very long time,” Peaslee said.

The results are considerably concerning when taking in account the role fast food plays the average American diet. The National Center for Health Statistics reported one-third of U.S. children consume fast food daily.

Samples were collected from a total of 27 fast food restaurant chains including McDonald’s, Burger King, Chipotle, Starbucks, Jimmy Johns, Panera and Chick-Fil-A, in and around Grand Rapids, as well as Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, D.C. The study did not include takeout containers, such as Chinese food boxes or pizza boxes.

Researchers reached out each of the fast food chains that had been included in the study to see if they were aware of the chemicals used in the production of the packaging. Only two responded, both stating they believed their packaging was free of PFASs — one going as far as to say that it had received verification from it’s supplier, although test results show both had tested positive for a “substantial amount” of chemicals.

“This is a wake-up call for those companies and the consumers,” Peaslee said.

Those involved in the study are hopeful the results will encourage fast food restaurants to choose nontoxic alternatives such as plastic coatings, aluminum foil or wax paper.

The Empire star (46) reveals she has been struggling to turn her back on her last bad vice for years, after previously ditching alcohol, but none of her anti-smoking attempts, including using nicotine patches to wean her off cigarettes, have managed to last.

Now Naomi is giving hypnotherapy another try after making quitting smoking one of her New Year’s resolutions for 2017.

“I still have a problem with smoking,” she confessed on U.S. talk show The View. “(I’m smoking) less, but it’s the hardest one (vice to kick) (so) I’m going back to the hypnotist.”

Naomi’s admission prompted show co-host Whoopi Goldberg to share the method which shocked her into giving up smoking a few years ago.

“(It was) two kids I saw in a video, who have cystic fibrosis – children who can’t breathe – and the last thing this little boy said in this video I saw, was, ‘All I wanna do is breathe like a normal person,’” she explained. “He was nine at the time, and I thought, ‘I spent 40 years smoking, and all this little boy wants to do is take a deep breath without fear.’ That did it for me… So every time you go to (smoke), realise that there’s people who can’t (breathe properly).”

The Ghost actress’ story struck a chord with Naomi, who revealed she could relate to the health struggle.

“There’s someone in my life that went through something similar quite recently too, so I know exactly what you mean,” she remarked, vowing to do her best to quit smoking for good.

Hypnosis Is the Only Thing That’s Helped Me Lose Weight

I could fill an entire book listing, in chronological order, my failed attempts at weight loss. Instead, I’ll just offer some highlights: Seven halfhearted rounds of Weight Watchers; two days each of every crash diet you can think of; two juice cleanses; training for and running three half-marathons; and diet pills that were basically prescription meth and made me such a raging lunatic my now-husband threatened to call off our wedding if I didn’t stop taking them.

Sure, I’d lose three pounds here and seven there — except for those diet pills; I looked damn good on those — but I always ended up where I started, or heavier. Slowly, those extra 15 pounds I’d never been able to shake turned into an extra 20, then an extra 25.

Friends, family, and even some doctors had told me to stop worrying and accept my body the way it was. And maybe I didn’t need to lose it — not everyone needs to lose weight. But my issues went beyond the scale. It was clear I had a complicated, if not clichéd, relationship with food.
