In fact, she used it as motivation to become one of the most successful athletes, models, and public speakers in the world.Aimee is famous for being the first amputee to compete against able-bodied athletes in National Collegiate Athletic Association events, and she competed in the Paralympics in 1996 in Atlanta. In 1999 she began modeling, and in 2002 she began an acting career. She speaks at conferences all over the world, and is well known for her TED Talks.Aimee Mullins is living proof that if you can dream it, you can achieve it—no matter what obstacles are in your way. When people look at me, they see a girl who was born without lower legs and has made something amazing of her life in spite of that. What they don’t see is the little girl inside of me who was told over and over again that I would never be able to do the things that I wanted to do. They don’t see the times when I was left out of games because my friends didn’t know how to include me. They don’t see the hurt that I felt when people laughed at me because they thought I was different. But I want people to know that it doesn’t have to be that way. Just because you have a disability, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything and be anything that you want to be. I’m living proof of that.

 

 

I was born with a condition called congenital amputation, which meant that I was born without lower legs. But I never let that stop me from doing the things that I wanted to do. When other kids were playing tag, I was right there with them. When they were climbing trees, I was right there next to them. I never let my disability define me or limit me in any way.

And when it came time to go to college, I knew that I wanted to compete in track and field. But because I was an amputee, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) didn’t allow me to compete against able-bodied athletes. So I sued them, and I won. And that opened the door for other disabled athletes to compete in NCAA events.

But my journey hasn’t been easy. There have been plenty of times when I’ve been knocked down, but I’ve always gotten back up again. And that’s what I want people to remember. Just because you have a disability, that doesn’t mean you can’t achieve your dreams.

So don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do. Don’t let your mind set your limitations. And never give up on yourself. You can do anything you set your mind to, regardless of your disability. And I’m living proof of that.
